Commvault’s content delivery efficiency improved across five regions with multilingual workflows in place
Multilingual
Language and region treated as an architecture decision, not a plugin choice. URL structure, hreflang and translation sync configured once, so regional editors publish in their own language without duplicating work or competing in search.
What we decide first
Two languages on a 40-page site is a plugin choice. Twelve markets across two continents is an architecture. These seven decisions decide which one you operate.
Spanish for one audience is not the same system as Spanish for Argentina and Spanish for Spain. That answer sets your URL structure, your locale ownership and your content model.
An explicit prefix per locale (/en/, /es/, /pt-br/), with slugs, permalinks and taxonomy terms translated where the tool allows. Deciding this before content exists avoids the redirect map later.
WPML, Polylang, MultilingualPress, TranslatePress and Weglot solve different problems and fail in different ways. We evaluate against content volume, editorial structure and your stack, then name the trade-off we accept.
Custom Gutenberg blocks, Advanced Custom Fields, custom post types, taxonomies and Gravity Forms each need explicit handling. Blocks rendered server-side through a render callback get missed most often.
Navigation labels, menus, widgets and the interface text around your content are a separate translation surface from the pages themselves. They get handled during base configuration, because a locale that launches with half-English navigation reads as unfinished.
Roles and permissions are set so each team edits its own locale without reaching into another market’s content. We define who manages which language during setup, because unowned languages go stale.
Base pages and their translations stay linked, so an upstream change is visible downstream instead of silently diverging. Orphan translations are what this prevents.
Proof
Commvault runs a multilingual, multi-region WordPress VIP platform we architected. Ueno Bank, Paraguay’s digital bank, expanded across LATAM markets on a platform designed to share content between markets with localized governance. Both sets of numbers come from those platforms.
Commvault’s content delivery efficiency improved across five regions with multilingual workflows in place
Brand consistency across Ueno Bank’s LATAM properties, held by a single shared design system
Developer dependency at Ueno Bank, so regional editors publish without an engineering ticket
Multilingual and SEO
Every localization decision is also an indexation decision. This is where the work overlaps with enterprise WordPress SEO, which is why we configure both together.
A consistent locale prefix, one canonical per locale, and a sitemap segmented by language rather than one file holding everything. Ambiguous structures lead Google to serve the wrong page to the wrong market.
Reciprocal annotations across every locale, including the x-default fallback, so each market gets the version written for it. We validate the rendered output, because hreflang that is present but not reciprocal does nothing.
Two locales sharing a language without differentiated content is how multilingual sites compete with themselves. Titles and descriptions are written per locale in Rank Math, not inherited.
